Wide toe box running shoes vs wide running shoes: 44 verified models

Short version: a wide toe box and a wide width are not the same thing. Altra says it plainly: "A FootShape™ shoe is not a “wide” shoe. It’s a shoe with a roomy toe box." If your toes feel squeezed but the rest of a standard shoe fits, a roomy-toe-box shoe may be enough. If the whole foot is wide, look for a shoe sold in a wide width (men's 2E/4E, women's D/2E). On 26 October 2026 we opened more than 50 running shoe product pages. 44 of them listed a wide fitting for the colourway that opened. For 4E (extra wide), the men's choices were all Brooks, HOKA and New Balance. The brands best known for roomy toe boxes, Altra and Topo Athletic, sell several models in a wide width too, though on Zappos only up to E (men) or C/D (women).

The tables below update from our database and show the exact width labels each page used on the day we checked.

Wide toe box vs wide width

These are two different things:

• Wide toe box: the front of the shoe is shaped more like a foot and less like a point, so the toes have room to spread. The midfoot and heel can still be standard or even snug. Altra describes its shoes as having "a roomy toe box. The difference is that with a roomy toe box, your foot is still secure through the midfoot." Topo Athletic lists a "roomy toe box" and a "secure midfoot + heel" as its signature fit.
• Wide width: the whole last is wider: forefoot, midfoot and usually the heel area too. That's what the width letters mean (2E, 4E and so on; see width letters explained).

Topo's FAQ gives the clearest numbers we found from any brand: "Our standard men's width is an E in the toe box and a D in the midfoot and heel, while our wide men's width is a 2E in the toe box and an E in the midfoot and heel. Our standard women's width is a D in the toe box and a B in the midfoot and heel, while our wide women's width is an E in the toe box and a D in the midfoot and heel."

So a Topo in standard width is already wider than standard at the toes. A Topo in wide adds width through the midfoot and heel as well.

Altra splits its range into three "FootShape" fits. On its US site, Original ("Our roomiest toe box ... and space through the midfoot") covers the Lone Peak, Escalante and Olympus families. Standard ("Plenty of room to help your toes move more freely, with a secure midfoot") covers Experience, Torin and Timp. Racing has "a snug midfoot for a secure racing stance". Altra adds: "Altra has a few styles with a wide mid foot in addition to a roomy toe box."

Which one do you need?

• Toes rub or go numb at the front, but the shoe is fine at the arch and heel: start with a roomy-toe-box shoe in your usual width (Altra, Topo).
• The whole shoe feels tight, you bulge over the sides of the sole, or you already wear 2E/4E (men) or D/2E (women) in other shoes: you need a shoe made in a wide width. Pick from the tables below.
• Both: look at the models that have a roomy toe box and a wide width: the Altra Lone Peak 9 and Paradigm 8 and the Topo Athletic Phantom 4, Atmos 2, Ultraventure 5 and MTN Racer 4.
• Pain, not just pressure: talk to a podiatrist before you buy.

On the women's scale, D is wide and EE is extra wide. The Altra Lone Peak 9 women's page uses C - Wide, which is narrower than a D.

These are UK sizes from Wide Fit Shoes UK, which labels its fittings with US-style E counts (2E, 4E).

If you need the widest fitting, these are the models whose pages listed it on 26 October 2026:

Men's 4E: Brooks (Adrenaline GTS 25, Beast GTS 26, Glycerin GTS 23), HOKA (Arahi 9, Bondi 9, Clifton 10, Gaviota 6) and New Balance (1080v15, Fresh Foam X 880 v15, Fresh Foam X 860v14, Fresh Foam X 1540v4). None of the Altra, Topo, ASICS or Mizuno running pages we opened went past 2E. In the UK, Wide Fit Shoes lists the Altra Lone Peak 9 and Torin 9 and two Nike models in 4E.

Roomy toe box, but only one width listed

So you don't have to check them yourself: on 26 October 2026 these Zappos pages listed one width only for the colourway that opened. Some describe a roomy toe box, which is exactly the "wide toe box ≠ wide width" point:

• Altra Torin 8 (men's D - Medium; women's B - Medium). The men's page says "A roomy toe box allows your toe to spread naturally." The UK Torin 9 above is sold in 4E, though.
• Altra Experience Flow 3 (D - Medium): "designed with a roomy toe box for added comfort."
• Topo Athletic Magnifly 6 (D - Medium): "roomy round toe".
• Altra Olympus 7 and Altra Timp 6 GTX (D - Medium).
• Brooks Ghost Max 3, ASICS GEL-Nimbus 28 Platinum, New Balance Fresh Foam 840v1 (men's, D - Medium) and ASICS GEL-Kayano 33 Lite-Show (women's, B - Medium). Other colourways or versions of these lines may come in wide, for example the men's GEL-Kayano 32 in the table above.

What to look for on a product page

1. The width letter, not the word. "Wide" means E on one page and 2E on another. Altra's and Topo's men's wide is E; Brooks' Beast and Glycerin GTS pages say E - Wide, while HOKA, ASICS, Saucony and Mizuno say EE - Wide.
2. A toe-box line in the description. Our table cards quote it when the source mentions the toe box, for example Altra Lone Peak 9: "The roomy toe box allows for natural movement". If the page says nothing, we write "Not stated by source". We don't guess.
3. Your colourway. Zappos can list different widths for different colours. The men's HOKA Clifton 10 page we opened listed D and 4E but no 2E, and the women's Brooks Ghost 17 page listed A and EE but no B or D. Check that your width is offered in your colour and size before you order.
4. The model year. Running shoes update yearly (Glycerin GTS 23, Beast GTS 26, Ride 19). A wide width on last year's version doesn't guarantee one on the new version, or the other way round.

Sizing tips

• Length and width are separate choices. If your usual length fits but the shoe pinches, change the width first, not the length.
• Try on at the end of the day and with your running socks.
• Do a simple outline check at home: stand on paper, trace your foot, and lay the shoe's insole on top. If your forefoot outline spills well past the insole, you need more width or a roomier toe box.
• Order two widths if returns are free, and keep the one where your toes can spread without the heel slipping.
• Know the scale. Women's D is already wide, and a men's D is standard. UK letters are different again (width letters explained).
